Art Inspiration Part 2: Claire Keane

Last week, I introduced to you one of my favorite artists — Glen Keane. Like father, like daughter, Claire Keane is another one of my favorite artists. One of my favorite thing about Claire Keane's artwork is how confident her line work is and her use of traditional mediums like watercolor and gouache with the use of vibrant colors.

Claire Keane is an American children's book author, illustrator, and visual development artist who worked on iconic projects such as Tangled, Frozen, Enchanted, and her latest project Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Claire Keane studied graphic design at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.

Looking at Claire's art, something that inspires me is the confident loose of rough lines in her sketches, depicting realism in her drawings. We can also see that Claire focuses on adding a traditional art feel to her work.

Let's take a look at an example:

In this example, I love the loose confident lines shown in the trees and the vibrant colors from the watercolors capturing the overall atmosphere of the moment.

Another aspect of Claire's art that I love is the overall playfulness that is captured within the work as well as establishing the overall mood within the atmosphere; we can see this in the next example here:

We can see here that the overall atmosphere is chilly and cold with the use of cold colors and black.  We can also get a sense of playfulness with the use of dramatic curvature lines. In the next example, we can continue to see this playfulness in Tangled's concept art, adding dramatic expressions within the character.

Overall, Claire Keane is another artist that inspires me. Some of my favorite works produced are her children's illustration books like Once Upon a Cloud and A Fairy Friend; I love the overall vibrant colors, simplicity, and whimsical aspects added to the artwork.
