Art Inspiration Part 9: Ernest H. Shepard

Graduating from the Royal Academy Schools, Ernest Howard Shepard is a British illustrator who is known for his works in children's books like Winnie the Pooh and The Wind in the Willows.

Growing up, E.H. Shepard comes from a family of artists. Shepard's mother, Jessie, is known for her father's watercolor works whereas his father, Henry, is known for his architectural works. E.H. Shepard's work experiences, like working for Punch Magazine, have allowed him to refine his art style, creating a comic-like feel to his work.

Looking at E.H. Shepard's illustrations, I like how simple his art style is in terms of using traditional pen and ink in achieving detailed illustrations that illuminate the personalities, realism, and movement of each character.

Another aspect I admire about Shepard's work is the ability to capture a sense of memorable scenes as well as the emotions of each character via the use of watercolor-painted backgrounds as well as the use of thin lines, creating texture, to create a realistic environment.

Overall, E.H. Shepard's art style has brought to life one of our favorite characters well-beloved characters, Winnie-the-Pooh.
